Institute Profile

Full job title - Research Associate or Senior Research Associate in Additive Manufacturing of High-Performance Electrical Machine Windings
Job number - ACAD104766
Division/School - School of Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Engineering Maths
Contract type - Open Ended
Working pattern - Full time
Salary - 33,797 - 38,017
Closing date for applications - 9th November 2020

Applications are invited for a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate position (depending on experience) to join the Electrical Energy Management Group (EEMG) within the Faculty of Engineering.

The Group's world leading research explores the challenges of high-efficiency electrical energy conversion systems linked to applications in low carbon aircraft propulsion and electric vehicle powertrains.

The candidate will work alongside the Principal Investigator on Additive Manufacturing of High Performance Shaped-Profile Electrical Machine Windings, a highly interdisciplinary EPSRC funded project in collaboration with Teesside University and three industrial partners.

The primary aim of the project is to exploit the geometric freedom offered by metal additive manufacturing to enable loss minimisation and consequently efficiency improvement in electrical machines.

This novel technology could address the increasing drive to low batch size, flexibility and customisation in design for high integrity and high value electrical machines for the aerospace, energy and high value automotive sectors while enabling CO2 reductions necessary to meet national and international emissions targets.

The successful design and implementation of high-performance additively manufactured shaped profile windings requires understanding of electrical machine design, frequency related loss mechanisms, electromagnetic and thermal analysis, material science, finite element analysis, computational geometry, design for additive manufacture, software development, experiment design and testing, among others.

As such, we are seeking candidates who can demonstrate a strong background in several areas and a willingness to learn and bolster their skills throughout the post to meet the demands of such interdisciplinary research.

Candidates should ideally be educated to postdoctoral level or have equivalent applicable industrial track record in a relevant field.

Additive manufacturing will be carried out by an industrial partner, hence excellent communication skills are highly desired. It is our intention to acquire in-house additive manufacturing capability though there is no definitive timeline at present.
