Job title - Research Associate - Conceptual Design of HARW Aircraft with Folding Wingtips
Job number - ACAD104624
Division/School - School of Civil, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering
Contract type - Fixed Term Contract
Working pattern - Full time
Salary - £33,797 - £38,017
Closing date for applications - 30th August 2020

Based in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and the Dynamics & Control Research Group, this is an opportunity to engage in and further develop the University’s novel aeroelastic modelling capabilities.

The focus of the role is conceptual design of High Aspect Ratio Wing (HARW) aircraft that incorporate folding wingtips to evaluate potential fuel savings and reduction in environmental impact.

The person appointed to this Research Associate role will be part of a small team – within the larger group of researchers in the field of aeroelasticity and loads – working to gain deeper insight into the design of aircraft with high span highly flexible wings, from a performance, aeroelastics and aero-acoustics perspective.

The one-year post is funded by the EU Clean-Sky2 as part of the U-HARWARD project and will start on 1st Sep. 2020, or as soon as possible after that date.

The research aims to exploit existing capabilities at U.Bristol in the modelling of aeroelastics, loads, flight dynamics and the use of folding wingtips for loads alleviation.

It is intended to deliver conceptual designs of HARW aircraft incorporating folding wingtips, and further develop our novel aircraft conceptual design capabilities.

The research to be conducted in this role will include conceptual aircraft design, sizing and performance optimisation of high aspect ratio aircraft incorporating loads alleviation devices.

The post-holder will work with a second Research Associate, who will focus principally on the aerodynamics and aero-acoustics aeroelastic aspects of the project.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering with expertise in aircraft design and numerical modelling using MATLAB and Finite Elements.

Preferably, the candidate should have experience in dynamics of mechanical systems and aeroelasticity.

They also need to be an effective communicator and able to work as part of a team.

It is anticipated that interviews will take place shortly after the closing date.

Informal enquiries can be made to Prof. Jonathan Cooper,
