Post-doctoral Research Associate - Earth Sciences

Organisation's Logo
University of Cambridge

The Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, is seeking a Post-doctoral research associate (PDRA) in igneous petrology.

The role is to perform geochemical analysis on ocean island olivines and couple these analyses with models of mantle melting to infer the thermo-chemical state of the deep mantle.

The results will feed into a wider multi-institutional NERC-funded investigation into the origin and dynamics of mantle upwellings (the MC2 large grant led by Cardiff University, and including Cambridge, Bristol, Imperial, Oxford, UCL, Royal Holloway, Leeds and Liverpool).

Ideally the candidate would start in 2020.

Applications are invited from candidates with relevant expertise in igneous petrology and geochemistry, preferably with a strong background in thermodynamic modelling and coding.

Analytical expertise in microanalysis is desirable, in particular previous experience of running electron microprobes and scanning electron microscopes.

You will work in the MC2 project as a part of a diverse multi-disciplinary team to build a new understanding of major convective upwellings in the Earth, what causes them, and how they contribute to geochemical cycling in the Earth system.

The candidate will have (or be about to obtain) a PhD and preferably some postdoctoral experience in a relevant field.

They will have significant experience in petrology and geochemistry, good communication skills, the ability to work in a team, good computing and data handling skills, and a track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
