At Southampton Law School, our mission is clear: excellence in our education, impact in our research and an international outlook. Currently ranked 20th in the Times League table and a founding member of the Russell Group, we have delivered high quality legal education for over 60 years.

Our research is individual and collective, single discipline and cross-discipline, working collaboratively, nationally and internationally, clustering around our legal research centres, including the Centre for Law, Policy and Society (CLPS), Private and Commercial Law (PCL), Health Ethics and Law (HEAL), the Stefan Cross Centre for Women, Equality and Law (SCC), the inter-disciplinary Centre for Law, Internet and Culture (iClic), and the internationally renowned Institute of Maritime Law (IML).

We’re now looking for a Head of School to drive the next stage of our development, growing our collaborations across China, India, Indonesia and Europe, sharpening our focus on sustainability and building a collegiate School community. If you’re a proven academic leader with vision, the University of Southampton is the place to make the most of your skills.

You’ll play a central role in furthering our dynamic learning community, expanding a vibrant student experience that educates tomorrow’s legal experts.

Taking on a substantive role as a Level 7 Professor, the Head of School responsibilities will approximate to 0.8 FTE, initial term of 3 years.

About you:

As well as a PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications / experience) in a relevant field, you’ll have an international reputation in research with a profile and network to match.

You’ll make a substantial contribution to REF 2020, demonstrating proven leadership on research outputs and outreach, including funding.

An outstanding track record in education is essential and you’ll be committed to building a first-class student experience and community, putting academic standards and rigor centre-stage.

A strong and capable leader, you’ll also deliver a vision for the School consistent with our drive for excellence.

What we can offer you:

Based at our lively Highfield campus, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, as well as our sports complex, Hartley Library and Staff Social Centre.

We support a flexible approach to work, as well as additional benefits that will make your life easier, such as a corporate health care scheme and generous holiday allowance. We will support your long-term future too, with access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), and a range of subsidies and discounts.

The selection process will be held over two days:

A presentation to members of the Southampton Law School on the afternoon of Monday 1 June 2020.
Interviews with the selection panel on the morning of Tuesday 2 June 2020
