Research Fellow - Food Science/Encapsulation

Job title: Post Doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 (PD1) - Food Science/Encapsulation- FoodEnCAP Project (Temporary) (Ref: 59)

Background to the role:

Teagasc is a Development Agency of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

The primary function of Teagasc is to support science-based innovation in the Agri-food sector and the broader bio-economy.

Teagasc is seeking to recruit a highly motivated early career scientist (chemist/biotechnologist/food scientist/food technologist) to undertake laboratory and pilot scale activities in relation to the protection and encapsulation of bioactive compounds for the purpose of inclusion into food products.

It is the ambition of the project team to fully transfer the developed technology to the industry while protecting the intellectual property rights.

The project 2019RP312 FoodEnCaps, entitled “A simple method of encapsulation for food” is funded by DAFM under the FIRMplus scheme. Excellent facilities and equipment are available at the Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark to support the research.

Duties & Responsibilities specific to the role:

•Undertake research and analysis at laboratory and pilot scale.
•Develop innovative solutions for the encapsulation of bioactive ingredients for the purpose of food applications using polysaccharides.
•Perform proof-of-concepts for food products.
•Prepare research reports for project managers, funding agencies and industry partners.

Person Specification:

Essential:

•PhD in Chemistry, Biotechnology, Food Science, Food Technology or similar.
•Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years’ post-PhD.

Desirable:

•Experience in encapsulation of bioactives.
•Experience working with alginate and/or other polysaccharides.
