CFMS Research Fellow in Digital Twinning for High Value Manufacturing and Construction

This role will provide you with a unique opportunity to work across two world class organisations to develop a cutting edge portfolio of fundamental and applied research.

The role is jointly funded by the University of Bristol and CFMS with the aim of building a portfolio of research and innovation projects to leverage and develop the capabilities of both organisations.

The role will initially involve leading a workstream on the 1.6M EPSRC-funded project concerning integrated revision control and twinning of digital-physical models during prototyping, and a portfolio of client facing projects and national collaborative research initiatives with CFMS (approx. 50:50 time split).

These two streams combined with the wider portfolios of the two organisations will provide the catalyst for developing a coherent and substantial programme of research beyond the initial 5-year appointment.

You will work independently and collaboratively with colleagues at the University, CFMS and within the region to develop research proposals of strategic importance, secure funding and execute research and innovation programmes.

Such programmes should also include consideration of opportunities for senior and advanced fellowship schemes that enable you to build and lead a significant research activity beyond the initial five-year appointment.

Although primarily research-based, the role will involve some teaching and project supervision activity in addition to supervising and mentoring post-doctoral research assistants and PhD students.

The client facing projects with CFMS will provide an opportunity to set student projects that solve real industry problems and provide a platform for further client engagement.

You will be joining an internationally leading research team in the Engineering Systems and Design Research Group (ES&D) within the School of Civil, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol, and one of the UKs national centres of excellence for digital technology, the Centre for Modelling & Simulation (CFMS) in support of the design of high value engineering products and processes.

You will spend approximately 50% of your time at each organisation (UoB School of Civil, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and CFMS facilities at the Bristol and Bath Science Park).

You should have expertise in virtual prototyping, mechanical design, construction and mathematical modelling as well as a wider knowledge of design and manufacture, and computer-based modelling.

You should be willing to travel within the UK and occasionally internationally.

This post is offered on a full time basis for three years with option of a two year extension.

It is anticipated that initial interviews will take place within two to three weeks after the closing date.

As part of your application you should include a short paper (max 3 pages) presenting the opportunities and challenges for digital twins in manufacturing and construction and potential research areas and funding sources that you might pursue.
