JOB TITLE: Research Officer - Meat Scientist (Ref: RO/MS/AT/0819)
Teagasc seeks to appoint a Research Officer to contribute to the development, management and leadership of the Teagasc Meat Research programme.
The role will include understanding the underpinning interactions of meat systems using traditional methods, and developing and optimizing novel analytical methods for characterizing meat and meat product quality.
The successful candidate will be a key member of the meat research group in the Food Quality and Sensory Science Department and will have responsibility for developing an internationally competitive meat research programme aligned with the needs of stakeholders.
They will also be expected to be actively involved in and contribute to the industry-led Meat Technology Ireland Centre at Ashtown.
Securing external collaborative public research funding will be an essential aspect of the role, as will maintaining contacts with industry and carrying out industry commissioned research and development projects.
In addition, they will play a lead role in ensuring the scientific excellence of the meat research programme, develop strong collaborative links both nationally and internationally, and contribute to successful technology transfer to the meat sector.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Lead and manage research projects in the area of meat science with particular reference to advancing the application of modern methods for characterizing meat quality and meat product functionality.
•Develop a science-based research programme focusing on meat products, including meat analogues and protein-based alternatives that are sustainably produced, nutritious and are clean label.
•Work closely with the Irish meat industry and its wider stakeholders to execute innovative programmes that will have impact within the Irish food sector.
•Engage with national and international funding agencies to attract research grants in the areas listed above.
•Study biochemical interactions and physiochemical parameters which underpin meat quality and product functionality.
•Apply emerging techniques in analytical food chemistry and other relevant disciplines to meat systems.
•Manage staff, students and resources assigned to the programme.
•Contribute to and actively engage in strategic planning within Teagasc’s Food Research Programme.
•Design and manage experiments, perform statistical analysis and publish results in scientific and popular press, at conferences and to stakeholders.
•Candidates must have an honours QQI Level 8 university degree in Food Science & Technology or a related discipline.
•PhD in a relevant discipline.
Note: While a PhD is an essential requirement for this post, equivalent research experience may be deemed acceptable solely at the discretion of the Director of Teagasc.
•Post-doctoral or industry experience in meat science or a closely related discipline would be a distinct advantage.
