Job Title - Research Associate in Human Geography
Job number - ACAD104147
Division/School - Bristol Veterinary School
Contract type - Open Ended
Working pattern - Full time
Salary £33,199 - £37,345 per annum
Closing date for applications - 8th September 2019

Bristol Veterinary School have an exciting opportunity for a Human Geographer (or similar social science background) to join our Phase II upscaling project in Colombia’s Amazonia region.

BIO-smart is an interdisciplinary and international collaboration working with dairy farmers and silvo-pastoral farming systems (SPS) to limit deforestation and improve livelihoods in Colombia’s Amazonia.

Phase I focused on farmers ideas of “farm landscapes” in relation to SPS uptake.

You will work in partnership with the Sustainable Amazonian Landscapes and extend the research onto another two Amazonian regions, widen our sample and question the location of the issue of low SPS uptake in farmers’ minds to look instead at the design and provision of SPS projects and the wider political economy of livestock farming in Colombia.

You will also explore other scripts emerging from our findings, such as “worked landscapes” in relation to how farmers describe their identities and join a fun team of entomologists, plant ecologists and economists.

You will have strong qualitative research skills, some basic knowledge of statistical analysis and be ready to assume some admin responsibilities.

Fluency in spoken, read and written Spanish is essential as is an ability to communicate with multiple audiences.

Some knowledge about Colombia or experience in working in Latin America would be desirable as will website design skills.

Candidates with interests in sustainable livestock farming, aesthetics and landscape, cultural geographies, agricultural extension, environmental politics and governance are particularly encouraged to apply.

The project is funded under the “Sustainable Agricultural Systems Programme” with funding from ESRC, BBSRC, NERC, Newton Fund and CIAT (Colombia), and would suit candidates with backgrounds in Human Geography, Anthropology, Sociology or similar.

The post will also involve liaising with the rest of the team in both countries and providing support with organising meetings, fieldwork trips and attending events.
