Teagasc Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 (PD1) - Animal Nutrition and Health - (Ref: PD1/TOMI/0819)
The DAFM funded project TOMI will produce infant milk formula (IMF) by cascade membrane filtration as an alternative to thermal processing. This next generation IMF will be safe with enhanced bioaccessibility, bioavailability and digestion of proteins, peptides and fats.
The successful candidate will conduct a feeding study using piglets to mimic the effect of IMF in the infant gut. Growth and feed efficiency will be monitored. Total tract and ileal digestibility of protein and amino acids as well as kinetics of digestion will be studied. Faecal and digesta samples will be freeze dried and archived for microbiota sequencing. Blood taken at slaughter and processed for downstream analysis.
Approximately 10% of the entire global exports of IMF are manufactured in Ireland. This project has the potential to radically improve the quality of IMF produced in Ireland.
