Postdoc in Molecular Pharmacology / Biochemistry

The Department of Forensic Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of molecular pharmacology / biochemistry in the group of Associate Professor Steffen Sinning as per 1 November 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a 3-year fixed-term full-time position.

As a postdoc at the Department of Forensic Medicine, you will be a part of the Faculty of Health at Aarhus University. The department employs 70 employees, of which 35 have an academic background, while 10 are tenured academic staff. Our mission is to contribute to the prevention of crime, accidents, premature deaths and suicides through research, education and forensic investigations. As an employee at the department, we expect that you contribute to achieving this goal. The department comprises two sections providing commissioned work for the Danish National Police and a basic research section. The Section of Forensic Chemistry conducts quantitative and screening analysis for illegal and legal drugs and their metabolites in human biological samples as well as non-biological samples (police seizures). The Section of Forensic Pathology performs autopsies, crime scene investigations and clinical forensic examinations. Both sections hold either ISO 17025 or ISO 17020 quality standard accreditations. Apart from the commissioned work, the department has three research units, which focus on bioanalytical chemistry, forensic imaging and clinical forensic medicine. You will be part of the bioanalytical chemistry unit focusing on basic research. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.

Our infrastructure is well-developed with modern laboratories. You will work in newly refurbished and well-equipped laboratories situated in conjunction with the Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus N.

Description of the position

The research project is aimed at developing a new class of ligands for targets in depression using a state-of-the-art methodology. Our part of the project is to evaluate the pharmacological profile of these ligands in vitro to map structure-activity relationships and to assist in devising improved version of the ligands. Eventually, the successful ligands will be tested in animal models of depression. You will also use the developed ligands in ongoing structure-function studies of targets in depression.

Depending on further funding the selected candidate can potentially be involved in additional projects regarding other topics in environmental sociology. There will also be possibilities for contributing to teaching of graduate courses in environmental sociology as well as other teaching activities, and involvement in applications for further funding can be expected.

Responsibilities
As Postdoc in the group of Steffen Sinning your position is primarily research-based but may also involve limited teaching assignments and supervision of other group members. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance. Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Independent research of high international quality, including publication
  • Establishing expression of receptor and transporter proteins in cell cultures
  • Establishing radioisotope and/or fluorescence/luminescence based methods for in vitro assays of receptor and transporter function
  • Evaluating the pharmacological profile of experimental drugs in vitro to determine structure-activity relationships
  • Assisting in devising improved versions of the experimental ligands

You will report to the Associate Professor, Steffen Sinning, and Head of Department, Christian Lindholst.

Your Competencies
You have academic qualifications at PhD level, preferably within one or more of the following areas:

  • Biochemistry/molecular biology
  • Cell biology
  • Pharmacology or molecular pharmacology
  • Biophysics

Experience with cell cultures and cell-based assay systems would be an advantage. Also, experience with various optical/fluorescence/luminescence based techniques would be advantageous.

As a person, you are ambitious, independent, take ownership for your own project and are ready to assist in other projects. We expect you to possess good communication and interpersonal skills and to be fluent in oral and written English.

In order to be assessed as qualified for a Postdoc position, you must meet these academic criteria.

Shortlisting will be used.
