The Faculty of Medicine of Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (JLU) and the University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg GmbH, Giessen Campus, invites applications for a
W2 Professorship in Prenatal Medicine and Foetal Therapy
as of now.
Reference is made to § 61 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG), the non-tariff terms of employment apply, and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
The future incumbent will assume leadership of the section of Prenatal Medicine and Fetal Therapy in the Clinic for Obstetrics and Gynecology. The duties of the successful candidate will be to represent the whole scope of the subject in research, teaching and patient care. The tasks of the professorship related to patient care will be managed by the University Hospital.
Special emphasis is placed on the care and improvement of outcomes of congenital heart defects in cooperation with the childrens’ heart center (Kinder-Herz-Zentrum), particularly in foetuses/children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Furthermore, maternal-fetal development in pulmonary hypertension and its effects on pregnancy are particularly important. The treatment of congenital malformations includes – apart from diagnostics with fetal ultrasound and integration of MRI examinations – comprehensive knowledge in carrying out invasive fetal therapy procedures.
The further development of the professorship should be focused on a concept of combining the obstetrics and the perinatal approaches. As far as the aspects of the fetal therapy are concerned, a close cooperation within the gynecological hospital, paediatric surgery and all other surgical disciplines in dependence of the institution concerned and neonatology are desired.
During the assignment at JLU, publications in designated national and international journals and successful extramural funding projects, preferably with the DFG, are expected from the candidate. The future incumbent should actively cooperate with the existing research cooperations and actively organize research projects and new networks, e. g. nationally and internationally. She/He will be expected to closely cooperate with the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL), an involvement in JLU-TRAINEE, a structured graduate program, and JLU-CAREER, a Clinician Scientist Program in Biomedical Research aiming to support young academics.
The desired candidate is expected to network within the research foci of the department and JLU, i. e. oncology and tumor biology, cardio-pulmonary system, infection, inflammation and immunity, as well as reproduction and reparation/regeneration.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected.
The candidate will furthermore be expected to integrate gender issues in research, teaching and patient care.
The following qualifications are required: Full and excellent university education in medicine, the required qualification for scientific work according to § 61 Para. 1 HHG, usually proven by a doctorate with merit, and other additional pertinent academic achievements (e. g. habilitation or publications in designated international journals). The candidate should have a recognition as „Ärztin/Arzt für Frauenheilkunde und Geburtshilfe“ (medical specialist for special obstetrics and gynecology), with an additional specialization in obstetrics and perinatal medicine. Furthermore she/he should have an advanced training authorization in this field as well as experience in coordinating scientific projects in interdisciplinary networks. Experience and success in obtaining extramural funding, preferably with the DFG, is required. Furthermore, a proof of a particular pedagogic aptitude and a necessary qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching with great commitment are required. The candidate is also expected to provide publications in designated national and international journals.
The future incumbent should have a particular expertise in fetal echocardiography, particularly in early fetal echocardiography, perinatal cardiology and general malformation diagnostics. Furthermore, the future incumbent should have comprehensive knowledge in the diagnostics of prenatal treatment of malformations and their therapy. A DEGUM Level III qualification is expected.
It is assumed that the incumbent has the necessary management experience to perform the described management tasks.
