The Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Biochemistry invites applications for a
W2 Professorship (with W3 tenure track)in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
This is provisionally limited to six years as of October 1st, 2019. Reference is made to § 64 section 1 and 4 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. In case of eligibility, which will be evaluated according to § 64 section 2 HHG, a permanent W3 Professorship will be offered subsequently. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
The successful candidate is expected to cover the full spectrum of Biochemistry and Molecular Biochemistry in research and teaching. The job advertisement is addressed to scientists with a proven internationally recognized academic expertise in his/her research field, a research focus in the field of investigating disease-relevant molecular mechanisms. This implies integration in existing research initiatives of the department.
The potential candidate is expected to become actively involved in the existing research networks, should independently organize cooperation projects, which in particular are promoted by the DFG (Research Group, SFB / Transregio), and she/he should organize national and international networks. The desired candidate should also network within the research foci of the department and Justus-Liebig-University (JLU), i. e. cardio-pulmonary system, infection, inflammation and immunity, tumor biology / oncology as well as reproduction and reparation / regeneration. This includes a linkage to the collaborative research projects of the Cluster of Excellence, “Cardio-Pulmonary Institute“ (CPI), German Center for Lung Research (DZL), German Center for Infection Research (DZIF), SFB 1213 and 1021,Transregio SFB 81 and 84 as well as future research networks. An involvement of the professorship in the priority area “cardio-pulmonary system (heart / lung) and in the potential area “infection and active ingredients is desirable.
The position includes cooperation activities with the W1 Professorship (with W2 tenure track) in Proteomics with a focus on Mass Spectrometry, which will be established in the department. (For details see http://www.uni-giessen.de/fbz/fb11/institute/biochemie).
A close research cooperation with the University Center of Biomedical Informatics Institute of Medical Informatics and Big Data Analysis is planned. Apart from working in the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL), an involvement in JLU Career, a Clinician Scientist Program in Biomedical Research aiming to support young academics, is expected.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects.
With regard to teaching, the professorship is connected with the central tasks for the preclinical parts of the programs for medicine and dentistry. Furthermore, a participation in the Master of Science degree program in Biology is desired.
A strong involvement in cultivating international cooperation is also expected. The successful candidate will furthermore be expected to integrate gender issues in research and teaching.
Full university education in medicine or natural sciences, the required qualification for scientific work according to § 61 section 1 HHG, usually proven by a doctorate with merit, or other additional pertinent academic achievements (e. g. habilitation or a similar scientific performance which may have been achieved outside of the university or within the framework of a junior professorship), publications in designated international journals, experience in leading a working group, experience and success in obtaining extramural funding, especially with the DFG, and a proof of a particular pedagogic aptitude and a necessary qualification to represent the subject in academic teaching with great commitment are required. The applicant should also be experienced in cooperating on an international level.
With the application, the qualifications and experience obtained in curricular teaching for the whole scope of the subject of Biochemistry / Molecular Biology have to be demonstrated.
