The Faculty of Medicine, Rudolf Buchheim Institute of Pharmacology, invites applications for a

W2 Professorship in Cellular Pharmacology and Toxicology as of now.

Reference is made to § 61 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to conditions of employment on § 62 HHG.


The duties of the successful candidate will include a competent representation of the whole scope of the subject of Pharmacology and Toxicology in research and teaching. The emphasis of the professorship will lie in the research of disease-related molecular mechanisms in cell-based model systems. A close cooperation within the existing research foci of the department – cardio-pulmonary system, infection, inflammation and immunity, oncology as well as reproduction and reparation/regeneration – is expected. This includes the already existing collaborative research projects of the Cluster of Excellence, „Cardio-Pulmonary Institute“ (CPI), German Center for Lung Research (DZL), German Center for Infection Research (DZIF), Transregio SFB 81 and 84, SFB 1213 and 1021 – and future research networks. Apart from working in the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL), an involvement in JLU TRAINEE, a structured graduate program, and JLU CAREER, a Clinician Scientist Program in Biomedical Research aiming to support young academics, is expected.

The candidate will be expected to make a commitment to maintain international cooperations and to integrate gender issues into the professorship’s research and teaching agenda.

The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects.


The following qualifications are required: Full and excellent university education in medicine or natural sciences, the required qualification for scientific work according to § 61 Para. 1 HHG, usually proven by a doctorate with merit, other additional pertinent academic achievements (e.g. habilitation) which may have been achieved outside of the university or within the framework of a junior professorship, experience and success in obtaining extramural funding, the proof of a particular pedagogic aptitude, and a necessary qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching with great commitment. A recognition as “Fachärztin/Facharzt für Pharmakologie und Toxikologie“ (medical specialist for pharmacology and toxicology), “Fachpharmakologin/Fachpharmakologe” or “Fachtoxikologin/Fachtoxikologe” (pharmacological or toxicological expert) as awarded by the German Society for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology (DGPT) is desirable.

The successful candidate should be internationally recognized with regard to specialization and should have experience in international networking. The candidate should also be experienced in leading a working group. A focus in disease-related molecular mechanisms is desirable. Publications in designated national and international journals are required.
