Basic Function of the post:
The successful candidate will work as part of a team based in the Biosciences Department located in Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark, Fermoy, Co. Cork.
Their principal responsibility will be to measure the bio-accessibility and functionality of minerals derived from fish bone powder in comparison with existing mineral sources available in the market using in vivo studies.
They will be required to engage with stakeholders throughout the project at regular team meetings and to provide input into the final report.
Duties & Responsibilities specific to this project:
Assess physico-chemical properties of fish bone powder in comparison with calcium rich supplements available in the existing market.
Compare profiles of in vitro bio-accessibility and bio-availability using simulated GI tract treatment and Caco-2 cell culture models.
Prepare research manuscripts for high impacting peer review journals.
Disseminate results and outputs in order to commercialise and capitalise on a potential new product.
Mentor and assist students and early-stage researchers in the research group.
Additional Duties & Responsibilities:
Interpret research findings and prepare scientific and popular press publications.
Disseminate research findings to a variety of audiences as appropriate (Education and Public Engagement activities).
Assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and action plan.
Comply with all relevant Teagasc policies and procedures.
Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations.
- This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.
Actively participate in the Teagasc Post Doctoral Fellowship programme and review processes, and to undertake all Post Doctoral fellowship training and associated duties as agreed in the Training & Development Plan.
Take up additional duties as they may arise and be assigned by management.

PhD in Microbiology, Biochemistry or related discipline.
Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years post-PhD.
Experience in accessing the bio-accessibility and functionality of potential foodstuffs/supplements through in vitro testing.
Experience in securing ethical approval for potential in vivo analysis.
