Research Assistant Position in Software Development

Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel

The centre of excellence is offering a

Research Assistant Position in Software Development

starting on January 1st 2019. The position is assigned to the chair in geohydromodelling at the Institute for Geosciences.

The increasing complexity of software describing and quantifying processes in the geologic subsurface and their expected predictive ability require a continuous adaption, improvement, maintenance and backup of the numerical software. Accordingly, the task of this position is the development and provision of scientific numerical simulation software, and simulation workflows for application and usage in the area of geo-energy with special focus on geothermal use.

The occupation may commence as soon as the positions funding by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) has been approved. The position is limited to three years. This is a full-time position (38.7 h/week). Partial employment and flexible working time models are basically possible. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German tariff for public employees (TV-L E 13).

Job duties and requirements:
Identification and quantification of processes in the subsurface
Development and implementation of mathematical quantitative descriptions of these processes, required boundary conditions, interfaces to other simulation programs and technical facilities
Development and implementation of functions to control and map load curves of geotechnical and geothermal facilities
Improvement of the software (e.g. open-source software OpenGeoSys) to describe thermo-hydraulic processes in cooperation with other scientific partners
Maintenance of the software, benchmarking and sustainment of the functional capability of existing and new modules and program parts
Documentation and description of functionality of the software, parallelisation, improvement of usability, and support of other users

Skills and qualifications:
Doctoral degree in the field geosciences, engineering sciences or related disciplines
Professional skills in programming
Experience in parallelisation of numerical software and in working with parallel computers
Deep understanding of physical, thermic and hydraulic processes on scales from small single experiments to large scale subsurface
Willingness and independent training in the field of geothermic energy systems and geoscientific basics
Enjoyment of interdisciplinary work
Excellent communication skills
Ability to work independently, but also as part of a large research team
Proficient German and English language skills
