in Proteomics with a focus on
The position is offered with the earliest possible starting date for a period of six years pursuant to § 64 Para. 3 and 4 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG). According to § 64 Para. 3 HHG, the applicant should have gained a doctoral degree at an institution of higher education other than Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) or have been in academic employment at an institution other than JLU for at least two years after conferral of a doctoral degree. The duration of said post-doctoral employment may not exceed four years or in the case of successful completion of further academic training pursuant to § 62 Para. 6 HHG, may not exceed seven years. In the case of successful completion of the six-year W1 position, which is to be assessed in an evaluation procedure pursuant to § 64 Para. 2 HHG, the appointment will be converted into a permanent W2 professorship. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
The successful candidate will lead a team in the mass spectrometry laboratory which is located in the Biochemical Institute. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to cover the full spectrum of Biochemistry and Protein Biochemistry in research and teaching.
During the qualification period, the position requires the participation in teaching (4 semester periods per week) for undergraduates in the preclinical section for Medicine and Dental Medicine. The integration of gender issues in teaching and research is desirable.
The future work also involves planning and bioinformatical analysing of mass spectrometry experiments. Appropriate equipment for proteomic experiments is available in the Biochemical Institute and will be further expanded (see www.uni-giessen.de/fbz/fb11/institute/biochemie). First experiences in acquiring external funds are desirable. Successful raising of such funds during the qualification period at JLU is required.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected. The willingness for cooperation with other scientists participating in cooperative research networks (cluster of excellence cardio-pulmonary Institute (CPI) and further focus areas of the faculty including infection/inflammation and repair/regeneration) is requested. This implies integration in existing cooperative research clusters Excellence Cluster Cardio-Pulmonary System (ECCPS), CRCs 1213 and 1021, Transregio 81 and 84 and future joint research initiatives. A scientific cooperation with the Deutsches Zentrum für Lungenforschung (DZL), Deutsches Zentrum für Infektionsforschung (DZIF) and the Gießener Graduiertenzentrum Lebenswissenschaften (GGL) is expected.
The successful applicant has reputation and visibility in her/his research area and experiences in the application of mass spectrometric methods for the identification of proteins and their posttranslational modifications. The applicant is expected to handle all steps from sample preparation to the quantitative analysis of single proteins, multi-protein complexes and entire proteomes. Additional experiences in the proteome-based investigation of disease-relevant molecular mechanisms are desirable.
To accomplish the goals according to § 61 Para. 1 HHG, we expect an excellent academic degree in Medicine or Natural Science. We also request teaching experience as well as documented pedagogical abilities to cover all major areas of Biochemistry.
