The Faculty of History and Cultural Studies invites applications for a

W2 Professorship in Art History
with a focus on Art History of the Middle Ages

Reference is made to § 61 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

A qualification in art history is expected which, in addition to the doctorate, is proven by additional academic achievements (e.g. habilitation), with a clear focus on art history of the Middle Ages.

Candidates should represent the art history of the Middle Ages broadly in research and teaching. With respect to research, the candidates should have a strong focus on visuality and visual studies. Verifiable interests in material culture studies and media theories are requested. Gender-sensitive, transcultural and cultural-scientific research perspectives are highly appreciated, as is the ability and willingness to deal with medieval architectural and regional art history, at least in teaching.

In teaching, participation in in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes of Faculties “Sciences of History and Cultural Studies” and “Language, Literature, Culture” is part of the job profile. A prerequisite for this is proven teaching experience in the breadth of the subject. It is expected that candidates are willing to further develop the Bachelor's and especially the Master's programmes at the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU). Internationally visible research work and successes in the independent acquisition of external fundings (DFG, BMBF) are taken for granted, as is the willingness to actively participate in interdisciplinary research alliances and in the Graduate Centre for Cultural Studies (GGK/GCSC). Collaboration in the Centre for Media and Interactivity (ZMI) is expected.

JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.

Please send your letter of application (no emails, please) with a CV and a documentation of your qualifications and teaching competence to: The President of Justus Liebig University Giessen, Erwin-Stein-Gebaeude, Goethestrasse 58, 35390 Giessen, Germany, quoting reference number 4-30/18. Applications must be received by October 19th, 2018 at the latest.

Candidates are strongly recommended to refer to our webpage on application procedures at http://www.uni-giessen.de/stellenmarkt/merkblatt.pdf. Please only submit copies of your application documents as they cannot be returned after the application procedure has been completed.
