Basic Function of the post:

The successful post-doctoral fellow will work on a SFI funded Bioeconomy Research Centre (BEACON). The PD will contribute to the development of industry focused collaboration with participating SMEfs. Key elements of the role of the successful post-doctoral fellow will include the following:
To develop clean and green extraction technology for seaweed powder and extract containing bioactives.
To develop high quality seaweed powder for phytopharma, cosmeceutical, nutraceutical or functional food applications.

Duties & Responsibilities specific to this project:
To scale up the production process for seaweed powder and target bioactives.
œ To become familiar with the aims and objectives of the research topic, acquire an in-depth knowledge and understanding of background material and consulting up to date papers, reviews and patents
œ To draw up a plan for experimental execution of the work packages and identify and source
all the necessary facilities and resources
œ To order equipment, instruments, accessories and materials required for the work programme
œ To provide results and reports for consideration at monthly progress review meetings
œ To cooperate with other members of the team in delivering the main objectives and achieving the targets set out for the project.
œ To review progress on a continuous basis and if appropriate to revise original plans and schedules in consultation with the project supervisor and members of the team


Person Specification
This section outlines the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would be required to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Applications will be assessed on how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Essential
œ PhD in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical, Biochemical Engineering or related discipline
œ Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 yearsf post-PhD

Desirable
œ Experience in extraction of bioactive compounds from marine algae
œ Experience in setting own research agenda
