32,548 - 36,613 per annum

Wellcome Trust-funded post-doctoral positions in Structural Biology are available from 1st October 20018 at the School of Biochemistry, University of Bristol and at the cutting-edge Bristol Synthetic Biology Centre, BrisSynBio, a leading UK and international centre of excellence (www.bristol.ac.uk/brissynbio).

As part of a dynamic team, the post-docs will study the structure and function of large macromolecular complexes in gene expression and mRNA quality control. The project involves structure determination by crystallography and single-particle electron cryo-microscopy of large multicomponent complexes produced in insect cells (MultiBac technology), their purification and biophysical/biochemical characterization.

The positions require a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Structural Biology or a related field. Outstanding applicants have experience in guiding structure determination projects from start to finish. Knowledge in electron cryo-microscopy and image processing or crystallography is a prerequisite. Successful candidates are highly motivated, committed individuals who enjoy working as part of a highly dynamic, collaborative and multidisciplinary team and have excellent communication skills.

Experience with baculovirus-insect cell or mammalian cell expression is a plus. The post-docs will be based in the Berger-Schaffitzel (lead) laboratory in a highly collaborative setup including the Berger and Crump groups (Bristol), the Kulozik and Hentze groups (Univ. of Heidelberg, Germany) and Rappsilber group (Univ. of Edinburgh & Berlin).
