PhD scholarship in radiopharmaceutical chemistry
Applications are invited from enthusiastic and talented individuals for a PhD scholarship in radiopharmaceutical chemistry at the Hevesy Laboratory at DTU Nutech (Risų Campus).
As a PhD candidate, you will enter the research program at the Hevesy Laboratory, where you will join the effort to develop new innovative drug delivery systems for diagnosing and treating cancer with radionuclides. At the Hevesy Laboratory, tracer and targeting systems are designed, radiolabeled and synthesized from scratch using organic and inorganic chemistry, radiochemistry and nanotechnology. Within this field, your work will mainly focus on the radionuclide astatine-211 and the radioactive isotopes of iodine. Astatine-211 is an up-and-coming alpha particle emitting radionuclide with great potential in cancer therapy.However, its chemistry and the tendency for astatinated molecules to undergo in vivo degradation and subsequent thyroid accumulation pose show-stopping challenges.
Using state-of-the-art nanoparticle and targeting technologies, as well as organic synthesis, you will work to overcome these challenges and develop clinically useful radiopharmaceuticals based on astatine-211. During the development, radioactive isotopes of iodine (I-125, I-124, I-131) will be employed as surrogates for astatine-211, due to their shared halogen chemistry as well as for their own diagnostic and therapeutic applications. The developed systems will be prepared at the Hevesy Laboratory as well as the School of Pharmacy at the University of Copenhagen. They will initially be tested in mouse models at the Panum Institute (Uni. of Copenhagen), followed by larger animals, and potentially translated to human subjects. The project will involve a significant amount of travelling, including at least one extended stay abroad (minimum 3 months).
About the department
The Hevesy Laboratory is a radiochemical and radiopharmaceutical division within the Center for Nuclear Technologies (DTU Nutech), with about 25 employees. The laboratory has a 16.5 MeV cyclotron equipped with a beam line for in-house production of radioisotopes, both for PET scans (18F, 64Cu, 89Zr, 52Mn) and internal radiotherapy. These radioisotopes are put to use in radioactive pharmaceuticals. The laboratory has chemistry and biology research laboratories and clean rooms, which feature state-of-the-art equipment for working with radioisotopes.
At present, the research group at the Hevesy laboratory consists of a young and dynamic multidisciplinary team, focusing on the development of new radioactive pharmaceuticals for diagnostics and therapy. Our research is heavily interdisciplinary and features multiple collaboration partners both nationally and internationally. In addition, our in-house GMP team produces radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostics and therapy, which are delivered to local hospitals as well as external collaborators. All scientific communication in the research group is done in English.
Candidates should have (or be about to obtain) a master's degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, pharmacy, or similar. Further, candidates should:
Both practical and theoretical knowledge of nanomedicine, drug formulation, organometallic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, radioisotopes, pharmacology and physiology are considered advantageous.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
The primary place of work is the Hevesy Laboratory at DTU Nutech, Risų Campus in Roskilde.
