Assistant Professor in Mathematics

DTU Compute's Section for Mathematics invites applications for an appointment as Assistant Professor in mathematics. The assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position.

DTU Compute is an internationally unique academic environment spanning the scientific disciplines mathematics, statistics and computer science. At the same time DTU Compute is an engineering department covering applied mathematics as well as informatics and communication technologies (ICT) in their broadest sense.

DTU Compute strives to achieve research excellence in its basic science disciplines, to achieve technological leadership in research and innovation, and to address societal challenges in collaboration with partners at DTU and other academic institutions, nationally and internationally, and, equally important, with industry and organizations. DTU Compute interacts with leading centers and strategic partners in order to increase participation in major consortia.

DTU Compute plays a central role in education at all levels of the engineering programs at DTU - both in terms of our scientific disciplines and our didactic innovation.

DTU Compute is composed of 11 sections. The section for Mathematics covers mathematical disciplines which have potential for applications within engineering in the broadest sense. Our research spans from pure to applied mathematics, and includes collaboration on specific applications with external partners from universities and industry. The teaching covers mathematics at all university levels, and is under constant development, in particular with regards to e-learning.

The candidate is expected to actively take part in the promotion and development of research in pure and applied mathematics within one or more of the focal areas in the Section: Algebra, dynamical systems, geometry, and harmonic analysis.

Responsibilities and tasks
The candidate is expected to participate in planning and teaching at the bachelor-, master- and PhD levels as well as disseminating research results at all levels. Hence, the right candidate should value visionary and meaningful communication. Bachelor courses are mostly taught in Danish, other courses in English. For international candidates, DTU offers Danish language courses, with the purpose of being able to teach in Danish after two to three years.

We expect that the successful candidate will contribute to
  • Development of e-learning tools for introductory and/or advanced mathematics courses
  • Exploring the possibilities for research collaboration outside the Section, regarding both basic and applied aspects of mathematics
  • Exploring the possibilities for external research funding.
The duties of an assistant professor include research-based teaching and research (including publication/scientific dissemination duties). The distribution between the various duties may vary periodically, but a balance will be found so that the assistant professor is able to develop in both research and teaching. The Section for Mathematics is keen to ensure that an assistant professor is given supervision and guidance, including education in university teaching.

At DTU Compute, we value knowledge sharing and cross functionality. Therefore, the candidate is expected to cooperate and be eager to build relations with colleagues within the department and with other departments at DTU.

Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

The key qualification requirements are:
  • Documented scientific production/publication and research potential to become an international leader in your field.
  • Ability and desire to teach mathematics and develop mathematics teaching at all university levels.
  • Ability and desire to contribute to the Section's national and international collaborative efforts.
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:
  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • Societal impact
  • Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • International experience
  • Internal and external collaboration
  • Communication skills
