The Faculty of Medicine of the Justus-Liebig University Gießen (JLU), and the University Hospital of Gießen und Marburg GmbH, Giessen Campus, invites applications for a
W3 Professorship in Medical Microbial Pathogenomics
as of now
Reference is made to § 61 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. The professorship is an infrastructural component of the German Centre for Infection Research (DZIF) partner site in Gießen. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
The professorship will be associated with the Institute of Medical Microbiology. We are seeking applications from candidates with an excellent background in the field of newly emerging infections, in particular infectious diseases caused by multiresistant organisms, infection epidemiology and genome biology of bacteria. Novel insights into genetics and infection pathogenesis of multiresistant bacteria should be used for the development of new molecular and bioinformatics algorithms for infection diagnostics, therapy, and prevention, using the pre-clinical and clinical infrastructure and applying animal models. The professorship is tasked with the administration of a genome-, metagenome- and metatranscriptome-based bioinformatic platform. This also includes the maintenance of a state-of-the-art resource (“Microbial Genomics Resource Centre – MGRC”) that combines NGS-based genome and microbiome data with a biorepository.
The professorship will be an integral part of the new interdisciplinary Centre for Infection/Inflammation and Genomics of the Lung (CIGL). The successful candidate is expected to establish active research cooperation within the faculty and to develop, jointly with the professorship for Hospital Hygiene (to be appointed), the newly created “Hessian Universities Competence Centre for Hospital Hygiene” (together with the universities in Marburg and Frankfurt).
A close cooperation with current and future research teams of the faculty in the field of clinical infectiology, the DZIF centre Gießen, as well as the JLU centre for BioMedical lnformatics within the scope of the research campus of Central Hessen is a prerequisite. In addition, a close cooperation with the faculty’s scientific core themes – cardiopulmonary system, infection and immunology, as well as reproductive medicine and regeneration – is desired. The professorship should actively participate in international activities of the JLU and assume an active role using its own international network to foster the faculty’s international profile.
The incumbent should be recognized internationally in his/her research field and relevant publications should substantiate his/her research history. In addition, proof of particular pedagogic aptitude in conjunction with teaching competency in the English language is a required qualification. The candidate will represent the specialist field in its full depth in academic teaching and doctoral education with the highest commitment.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (research Campus Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects.
The incumbent is expected to hold either a degree in medicine, veterinary medicine or natural sciences, with an excellent doctoral thesis and adequate teaching qualifications, as well as relevant additional scientific accomplishments (e.g. habilitation). Publications in renowned national and international journals, as well as successes in acquiring and management of third-party funded projects (preferably DFG) are also required.
Gender issues should explicitly be integrated in the professorship’s research and teaching agenda.
JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.
Please send your letter of application (no e-mails, please) with a CV and a documentation of your qualifications and teaching competence to: The President of Justus Liebig University Giessen, Erwin-Stein-Gebaeude, Goethestrasse 58, 35390 Giessen, Germany, quoting reference number K-14/18. Applications must be received by 12th April, 2018 at the latest.
