Owing to the successful application to the German federal-state programme for promoting early-career researchers (tenure-track programme), the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Physics, Geography invites applications for a
W1 Professorship (with W2 tenure track)
The position is offered with the earliest possible starting date for a period of six years pursuant to § 64 Para. 3 and 4 HHG (Hessian Higher Education Act). According to § 64 Para. 3 HHG, the applicant should have gained a doctoral degree at an institution of higher education other than Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) or have been in academic employment at an institution other than JLU for at least two years after conferral of a doctoral degree. The duration of said post-doctoral employment may not exceed four years or, in the case of successful completion of further academic training pursuant to § 62 Para. 6 HHG, may not exceed seven years. In the case of successful completion of the six-year W1 position, which is to be assessed in an evaluation procedure pursuant to § 64 Para. 2 HHG, the appointment will be converted into a permanent W2 professorship.
The recently established position will focus on the nexus of human-climate-environment relations. Research will be conducted in the fields of exposure to and handling of climate change and environmental change, relevant adaptation and mitigation strategies as well as resulting migration patterns of past and present societies. Successful candidates should conduct interdisciplinary research activities in modelling the past and present climate and environment using various scenarios, time scales and spatial scales; this includes past and present changes in land-use and their impact on the environment. The professorship should represent the field of development research in the context of the topics mentioned above. In addition, the professorship should contribute to the understanding of the complex interdependencies of past and present human-environment-interactions, including geo-archeological aspects.
We are looking for candidates with a strong track record in publishing in the interdisciplinary field of human-climate-environment relations. The activities should be linked to the existing core fields of research in the Department of Geography (Climate Geography, Physical Geography, Human Geography), the Centre of International Development Research and other interdisciplinary institutions of the JLU Gießen. First experiences in the acquisition of external funds are welcome. During the employment at the JLU, successes in the independent acquisition of funds are expected.
During the qualification phase, candidates are required to offer 4 semester periods per week in the following study programs: Bachelor of Science in Geography, Master of Science in Human-Climate-PaleoEnvironment Interaction and teaching degrees. Candidates should have outstanding scholarly qualifications in research and teaching. First experiences in the further development of study programs are desirable. The inclusion of gender aspects in research and teaching is desired. Applicants should possess international contacts, a high proficiency of German and English, show commitment to the further internationalization of the department and be prepared to take over rotational positions in the management of the department and the faculty.
