Teagasc Post Doctoral Researcher (Level 2A) - Bioinformatician - (Ref. SFIPD/BIO/1117)

Basic Function:
This position will be filled by a post-doctoral researcher (PhD in Bioinformatics or related discipline) with experience in analysing high throughput DNA sequencing microbiota data. The post-doctoral researcher will be responsible for handling, storing and analyzing human microbiome bioinformatic data. Analysis will involve determining the composition and functional potential of these microbial communities. The successful candidate will have experience with respect to the analysis of DNA sequence microbiota data and have a corresponding publication record.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• To manage and conduct a specific programme of research and scholarship.
• To take a leading role in the further development of the research.
• Work closely with the corresponding wet-lab based Postdoctoral Researcher and technician and partner institutions within the Microbe Mom project.
• Advise APC researchers, partner institutes and customers regarding which analytical tools would best meet their needs.
• Analysis of DNA sequence data for research projects and papers.
• Preparation of research manuscripts for high impacting peer review journals.
• To mentor and assist students and early-stage researchers in the research group.
• To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities.
• Represent Teagasc at national and international meetings and conferences.
• To participate in APC Microbiome Institute Education and Outreach activities.
• To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service charter and action plan.
• To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
• Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.
• Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Person Specification
Essential
• A PhD in bioinformatics, computer science or related discipline
• Experienced in analyzing metagenomic and transcriptomic large data sets.

Desirable

• A PhD in bioinformatics, computer science or related discipline
• Experienced in analyzing metagenomic and transcriptomic large data sets.

Note: The ‘essential’ qualifications, knowledge, skills and behavioural competencies outlined above are ‘must-have’ which will be used in the selection process.
