Teagasc SFI Experienced Post-Doctoral Researcher (Level 2B) – Diet & Microbes - (Ref: SFIPD/DM/0617)

Basic Function:
This senior post-doctoral scientist will be involved in Targeted Project 2 of the APC, and will work with a team of scientists and post-graduate students The successful candidate will work with the team focusing on research to determine how specific food ingredients and macronutrients affect the composition and function of the microbiota, and then to rationally manipulate the microbiota through dietary intervention in animal models and human subjects, for the improvement of health. The ideal candidate would be experienced in determination of microbiota composition and functional potential, including isolation and characterization of isolated bacteria.

The appointee will perform studies to elucidate the functional properties (growth characteristics, utilization of simple and complex carbohydrates, and elaboration of bioactive metabolites) of isolated bacteria using in vitro models, cell culture models, and animal models, including animal necrotizing enterocolitis model. The successful candidate will have considerable experience with respect to the analysis of gut microbiota composition; molecular biology and DNA sequence data, especially of microbiota related data, and have an extensive publication record.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

• To manage and conduct a specific programme of research relating to gut microbiota analysis.
• To take a leading role in the further development of the research including seeking opportunities for further funding (including Horizon 2020).
• Work closely with the DNA sequencing platform operators, APC researchers and PIs and partner institutions.
• To advise APC researchers, partner institutes and customers regarding which analytical tools would best meet their needs.
• To manage and coordinate team members.
• To mentor and assist students and early-stage researchers in the research group.
• To generate intellectual property.
• Analysis of DNA sequence data for research projects and papers.
• To prepare research manuscripts for high impacting peer review journals.
• To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities.

Person Specification:

Essential

• A PhD degree in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology or related discipline (bioinformatics or computer science).
• Relevant post-doctoral experience.
• Molecular biology skills - experience of cloning, DNA/RNA purification and preparation.

Desirable

• Animal handling.
• Evidence of high quality research output.
