W2 Professorship for Biomarker-Research

Reference is made to § 61 section 7 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz (HHG), the non-tariff terms of employment apply, and to the conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. Proficient knowledge of the German language is expected.
The focus of the Professorship is the common scientific leadership of the “Kerckhoff Herzforschungsinstitut” [Kerckhoff Heart Research Institute] within the scope of a non-profit GmbH between the University of Giessen and the Kerckhoff Klinik GmbH Bad Nauheim. The Professorship comprises the coordination and administration of clinical studies within the scope of cardiac biomarker research. This position focuses on archiving of clinical parameters and collection of bio-materials within the scope of the expansion of the Kerckhoff Biomarker Register.
The scientific tasks that are to be performed by the future position holder include the conception, management and coordination of (policy/guideline-relevant) clinical studies and translational biomarker research in close cooperation with experimental cardiology at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, the Kerckhoff-Klinik Bad Nauheim as well as heading AG Cell Cytometry at the Franz-Groedel-Institut of the Kerckhoff-Klinik. In this capacity, Acute-Cardiology (myocardial infarct, congestive heart failure, cardiogenic shock) projects are to be planned and implemented at one’s own initiative, in close cooperation with the cardio-surgical department. In addition, new analytical methods in high-throughput procedures are to be established and developed, in order to examine a large number of patient samples. The objective is to advance the development of new diagnostic concepts and resulting therapeutic consequences. In collaboration, bio-information scientists and new analysis concepts of the collected data are to be developed.
The tasks of the future position holder include competent representation of the field of Experimental Cardiology in research and teaching. The position holder should be internationally recognized in his/her research field and should also be in possession of longstanding experience in basic research in the field of translational cardiology. Experience in FACS-Analytics, database supported patient register/bio-databases, SOP preparation, IT infrastructure and bio information sciences is desired. The applicant should have several years of experience in the leading and supervision of scientists and technical personnel. A close cooperation with related departments in the fields of cardio-surgery, angiology, vascular surgery, as well as developing the “University Center for BioMedical Informatics” within the existing research focuses of the field of study – cardiopulmonary system, infection, inflammation and immunity, as well as reproduction and reparation/regeneration – is expected, in particular integration into the German Center for Cardiovascular Research [Deutsches Zentrum für Herz-Kreislauf-Forschung (DZHK)] and the Excellence Cluster Cardio-Pulmonary System (ECCPS). Collaboration with the Giessen Graduate Center for the Life Sciences [Gießener Graduiertenzentrum Lebenswissenschaften (GGL)] is expected.
The universities Giessen and Marburg, as well as the Technical University Middle Hesse cooperate within the scope of the Research Campus Middle Hesse. In this context, the medical departments of Giessen and Marburg practice a structured cooperation on the basis of coordinated focuses. The applicants are expected to be willing to cooperate and work on
interdisciplinary collaborative projects across universities. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies are expected.
Qualifications include a degree in Medicine or Biology (or comparable degrees) and, in addition to a preeminent doctoral thesis, relevant additional scientific accomplishments (e.g. habilitation), as well as experience and success in acquiring outside funding. Relevant and, if possible, international publications in scientific journals are expected. In addition, proof of particular pedagogic aptitude with great engagement is expected, as a required qualification to represent the field of “experimental cardiology” in its full depth in academic teaching. Integration of gender aspects in the field of research and teaching is explicitly desired.
