About the role:
We seek a talented research engineer to drive further innovation, development and commercialisation of our current and future microfluidic sensor technologies and to be a consulting engineer for these technologies.
You will join an existing team of approximately forty research staff, engineering staff and graduate students equipped with world class fabrication, testing and design facilities together with instrumentation and analytical laboratories and access to sea going and polar research logistics.
You will lead and contribute to the design of in situ (i.e. deep sea submersible) microfluidic sensors through innovation and by improving current prototypes for marine and other hostile environments. This will include chemical (e.g. trace metals, nutrients, carbonate system) and biological (e.g. cytometry, nucleic acid analysis, immunosensing) sensors. This technology is deployed at sea (e.g. using robotic underwater vehicles), in coastal areas and in Polar Regions. These sensors provide data for use in environmental and climate modeling, in industrial applications such as Carbon Capture and Storage and for improving our understanding of the world's oceans. You will work in a research team and will be expected to publish the research widely, interact with our commercial partners (e.g. licensees of our IP) and construct funding proposals.
We seek applicants who can pull together expertise in multiple disciplines including fluidics, optics, chemistry, and mechanical systems to produce innovative, elegant design solutions for a range of applications. You will have qualifications and experience in some or all of these disciplines and experience or willingness to apply these to analytical systems. You will take advantage of the latest research and make use of computer aided design and analysis. You will be expected to lead production of peer-reviewed publications, patents, grant proposals and knowledge exchange activities (e.g. working with commercial partners). As a member of the team, you will receive support from experienced engineers and scientists in the group and you will in turn provide training, engineering, and fieldwork support to others.
A PhD or equivalent research experience in a closely related engineering or science field is essential. You will have a portfolio of work, including products and or publications in leading journals demonstrating your ability to deliver solutions to complex measurement problems and to quickly master new techniques.
This is a Fixed Term Appointment, available for three years, offered on NERC terms and conditions and is open to internal and external candidates.
This is a Band 6 position and the salary range will be £28,200 to £32,842 per annum.
Hours of Work:
The hours of working are full time, 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
We seek applicants who have a proven ability in solving research, engineering, manufacturing and organisational problems. A PhD in Instrumentation Engineering R&D/design or closely related discipline or equivalent research experience in an academic or industrial setting is essential. Experience of microfluidic systems, optics and biological or chemical sensors would be advantageous. You will have a broad spectrum of skills and have a flexible approach, demonstrating your ability to deliver solutions to complex problems and to quickly master new techniques.
