Sechenov University (Russia)
Research Institute of Molecular Medicine
The Research Institute of Molecular Medicine, Sechenov University (Russia) is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Fellow position to perform researches in the priority research areas and to provide competitive research results at the international level. The Research Institute of Molecular Medicine was founded in 2000 as a division of the Sechenov University in the light of the tremendous scientific and technical progress at the end of the second millennium. The emergence of new technologies in biology took medical science to the level of studying intermolecular interactions. There was a need for specialized academic medical institution which would be engaged in a study of the causes and mechanisms of human diseases, the development of adequate methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases carried out at the molecular and cellular levels.
The institute specializes on: clinical laboratory diagnostics, laboratory genetics, management and economics in the field of pharmaceutics and others. Its also engaged in fundamental biomedical research.
Main areas of research:
Development of approaches for creating drugs of a new generation,
Development of methods of early detection and diagnostic tools, and their pre-clinical investigations and referrals for clinical trials on the basis of modern achievements in molecular biology and genetic engineering.
Professionals working in these areas should combine a natural approach and high level of engineering thinking. It is essential that such an institution has links with the international scientific community to ensure the integration of Russian science in the global research process.
The Institute is composed of the managerial board and 9 research units: 2 divisions and 7 laboratories.
The basic principle of the institute in regards to the personnel policy is - continuous improvement of professional skills and increase of the scientific level of personnel. All employees have a degree in either: medicine, biology, pharmacology or chemistry and most are Ph.D. candidates.

Positions are available in the following areas (please indicate in your application the areas you are interested in, and give motivations for your selections):
Laboratory of Medical Genetics head Prof. M.V. Nemtsova
The laboratory of medical genetics is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow who will be involved in the new project Searching and characterization of the new genetic prognostic markers of bladder cancer. The main directions of our laboratory studies are the fundamental and clinical implications of germline and somatic mutations, DNA rearrangements and epigenetic DNA modifications in the carcinogenesis. These genetic alterations investigated as potential new DNA- and RNA markers of tumor progression and sensitivity to chemo- and targeted therapy. Recent findings in the lab are the mutational profiling of sporadic tumors (gastric, bladder, and renal cancer) with NGS technology and the development of approaches to DNA-diagnostics of hereditary cancer syndromes. We would like to encourage a candidate who is able to utilize different PCR modifications, real time PCR, Sanger sequencing and fragment analysis, genomics and computational biology.
Laboratory of Molecular Genetics of Human, head Prof. D.V. Zaletaev
Project: 'Spectrum of point mutations in frequent mental retardation syndromes'
Fragile X and Angelman syndromes are among the most prevalent inherited diseases in human. In most cases, they originate not from point gene mutations but from more complex molecular genetic events. Fragile X syndrome caused by a dynamic mutation, which is expansion of the trinucleotide CGG repeat in the promoter region of the FMR1 gene. Angelman syndrome caused by violation of normal imprinting of a number of genes in the imprinted region of chromosome 15. As far as these unusual but rather well studied molecular events are believed to account for the majority of disease cases, scarce remain studies of point mutations that may lead to the similar phenotypes.
Aim: to characterize spectrum of point mutations in the FMR1, UBE3A, ARX & MeCP2 genes in patients with Fragile X and Angelman syndromes and similar mental retardation phenotypes.
Methods: Next generation sequencing of all exons of FMR1, UBE3A, ARX & MeCP2 genes, validation of the identified mutations by Sanger sequencing.Patients cohort will be provided by the Research Centre for Medical Genetics.
Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Biology, head Dr. Ya.A. Andreev
Postdoctoral positions are available in the recently organized laboratory of Dr. Andreev, Institute of Molecular Medicine, Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Moscow, Russia . These positions are intended for highly motivated individuals with new or recent PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, cell and molecular biology, neuroscience or related fields. Our laboratory of Molecular and Cell Biology focuses on identification and characterization of new molecules targeting the acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) and TRP receptors. Ongoing study include synthetic, biochemical, electrophysiological, structural, cellular, pathological and in vivo experimental approaches to discover and characterize compounds showing high level of selectivity and specificity to receptors of interest, which may be perspective as tools for structure-activity studies, rational design of new modulators, and scaffolds for creation of novel targeted therapeutic means.
Department of Molecular and Cellular Pathology, head Prof. A.A. Ivanov
