The three Universities of Middle Hessen - the Universities of Giessen and Marburg and the THM University of Applied Sciences - founded the Research Campus Central Hessen to strengthen regional interconnection and establish trendsetting structures for research and funding for young academics, supported by the State of Hessen.
At each university two professorships with tenure track options will be established in “emerging fields” of top-level research as soon as possible. The professorships will be located in the relevant faculties.
In this context, the Faculty of Medicine of the Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen invites applications for a
W2 Professorship for Biomedical Informatics
and Systematic Medicine
provisionally limited to a period of five years the earliest possible date. Reference is made to § 64 sections 1 and 4 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz (HHG) and to the conditions of employment, based on § 62 HHG. In case of eligibility, which will be evaluated according to § 64 section 2 HHG, a permanent W3 professorship will be offered subsequently. Proficient knowledge of the German language is expected.
The professorship will be an integral part of the interdisciplinary “University Center for BioMedical Informatics”, which combines expertise in Bioinformatics, Medical Informatics and Computational Modelling. The professorship will be established at an interface between Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics. Its scientific core responsibilities will be to integrate Big Data from Omics studies (Epi/Genomics, Transcriptomics, Proteomics and/or Phenomics) of preclinical, as well as clinical models with longitudinal phenotypical patient data of disease history and therapy response within a system approach. The main objective in an interdisciplinary approach with other members of the “University Center for BioMedical Informatics” will be to develop algorithms and mathematical system models for the evaluation of multivariate biochemical data to provide novel insights into pathomechanisms of the pathogenesis and development of disease and support pre- and clinical/translational research.
The successful candidate will be in charge of representing the subject in both research and teaching in its entirety at the Faculty of Medicine. She/he should be internationally recognized in the field of bioinformatic/biomedical data-analysis and/or modelling. Significant involvement in the interdisciplinary “University Center for BioMedical Informatics” is expected. Cooperation with the institutes and clinics of the faculty, as well as within the existing main research areas of the faculty - cardiopulmonary system, infectious diseases and immunology, reproductive medicine, regeneration - is expected.
The candidate should support Big Data Analyses and modelling approaches of the existing research collaborations and -initiatives, like the BMBF supported Framework Medical Informatics and the follow-up of the excellence initiative. In addition, the candidate should independently establish research projects and new collaborations, as well as national and international networks. The candidate should also participate in the Giessen Graduate School for the Life Sciences (GGL).
The Universities of Giessen and Marburg and the THM University of Applied Sciences collaborate in a research alliance (research Campus Central Hessen) and it is expected that the applicant participates in university- and department-wide joint projects.
The following qualifications are required: a university degree in the topics of Bioinformatics / Medical Informatics or in the subjects of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Informatics with appropriate qualifications, a doctorate with merit and internationally recognized publications, as well as experience and success in attracting extramural funding. Furthermore, the applicant should demonstrate exceptional skills in teaching, covering all aspects of the discipline. Active participation in medical training, as well as in the programs of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology is expected. Desirable are experiences in a structured training program for doctoral students and in promoting young researchers. Gender issues should explicitly be integrated in the professorship’s research and teaching agenda.
